The Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund and United Illuminating have contracted Wallingford-based Competitive Resources Inc. to canvass targeted areas of New Haven, Connecticut as part of the Home Energy Solutions program.
The program is centered at Troup Middle School, at 259 Edgewood Ave., and has begun branching out into the surrounding area.
This effort is patterned after past efforts focused on the West River neighborhood in New Haven as well as a similar initiative in Bridgeport.
Home Energy Solutions sends technicians into homes – for owners and renters alike – who evaluate energy performance and make certain energy efficiency improvements, including sealing drafts, cracks and leaks; checking insulation and appliances; installing energy-efficient light bulbs; and providing tips on how to reduce energy costs.
The service typically has a co-pay homeowners and renters pay, but is available for free to those who meet certain income guidelines.
“This program and the canvassing efforts have been a huge success in Bridgeport and other communities. We’re looking to reach between 3,500 and 4,500 households within the community.” Chris Ehlert, manager of residential energy service at UI, said in a statement.
City residents may also call Competitive Resources at 1-888-403-3500 to see if they are eligible.
The Home Energy Solutions program is offered through the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund, which has various programs that provide consumers with financial incentives to reduce their energy use.
The fund is supported by all UI and Connecticut Light & Power Co. customers through a “combined public benefits charge” that appears on ratepayers’ electric bills. It also is funded by customers of Connecticut Natural Gas, Southern Connecticut Gas Co. and Yankee Gas Services Co. through a “conservation charge” included in the rates they pay.
